Feed Your Brain and SAC
FYB is a family literacy summer program that promotes reading bilingual books with the goals of increasing family engagement, preventing summer learning loss, and reading on grade-level. Kids are more likely to graduate high school and go to college if they read on grade-level. We partner with the Springdale Public Schools Summer Lunch Program and have five sites including OneCommunity’s Casita de Libros where parents can check out books to meet their home schedules. During Summer 2022, we piloted Science Action Club (SAC), a STEM program aimed at engaging youth through birding and learning about citizen scientists at George and Parson Hills Elementary Schools. The program will be offered in Summer 2023.
Since 2020, kids have read over 7,000 books each summer. Our community partners include Springdale Public Schools Summer Lunch Program Raising Cane’s, Botanical Garden of the Ozarks, Theatre Squared, City of Fayetteville CDBG, Fayetteville Housing Authority, Tyson United Way NWA Summer Internship Program and University of Arkansas School of Social Work.
